I made the last episode for season five of Beyond the Gallery with my friend Kevin Larkin, and it’s such a fun conversation. Kevin is a musician based in Denver, Colorado, and he composes, performs, produces, and teaches music.

On this episode we talk about growing up with music, composing and collaborating, letting go of ideas, and more.

And in case you didn’t catch the last couple episodes with Ann and Taiko – yep it’s in fact a conversation. If Beyond the Gallery were a podcast, it’d be this. This is a new format that I’m playing with for the show, and I’m so grateful to Kevin for exploring and playing with the format with me (thanks Kevin!).

Please experience more of Kevin’s music projects at pineross.com, and visit chimneychoir.com to check out his band’s amazing music too.

KEVIN’S BIO

Kevin Larkin is a composer, performer, producer, educator and a founding member of Denver-based music collective Chimney Choir. His work often explores the intersection of the organic and digital sides of sound, incorporating manipulated field recordings and processed acoustic sources. With Chimney Choir he has written two original ballets for contemporary dance company Wonderbound, arranged and performed with the Colorado Symphony, performed at Ted-X Boulder, and conceived and performed numerous immersive musical experiences including 2016’s (dream) show in collaboration with Colorado Public Radio. The band was also asked to lead Colorado Creative Industries 2015 Detour project, which featured performances and songwriting workshops in communities across the state. Kevin has released two solo albums under the name Pineross and composes ambient/sound collage music under the moniker Aamateur Aastronomy. He has collaborated with filmmakers, dancers, environmentalists, songwriters, and poets. As an educator he has taught mandolin, guitar, computer production and early childhood music education along with performing in schools through the Think360 Arts program. When not working on music, you can usually find Kevin in a hammock somewhere off of 285 searching for Yetis.

MORE ABOUT THIS EPISODE

This season of Beyond the Gallery, and this year, mark a couple special milestones to me personally and professionally that I’d like to share:

  • This month – October 2018 – marks my 10th year in business. I’m so excited to celebrate 10 years serving and supporting artists and creatives.
  • As of this season, we’ve made 56 episodes of Beyond the Gallery. To celebrate, this episode with Kevin (and the episodes with Ann and Taiko, too) are a chance to play with the format of the show.

This episode features Kevin’s song “Maximum Bob” and it’s available under his experimental soundscapes moniker Aamateur Aastronomy. Listen to it and buy it here

Enjoy! Thanks for being here. -Zach
